Medical Colleges and Hospitals Directed to Ensure Compliance
Vijayawada: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reiterated its directive for doctors to prescribe medicines using generic names, as many practitioners in hospitals under the Director of Medical Education (DME) continue to overlook this guideline.
In response, Dr. D.V. Laksmi Narasimham, Director of Medical Education, has instructed Principals of Government Medical Colleges and Superintendents of Government General Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh to ensure that doctors comply with the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 mandate.
“Doctors must use generic names while prescribing medicines. Hospital authorities should take responsibility for sensitizing doctors, monitoring prescriptions, and maintaining compliance records,” Dr. Narasimham emphasized.
To reinforce adherence, Government General Hospitals have been directed to establish prescription audit committees, which will conduct bi-monthly audits to ensure doctors are following the prescribed norms.
