Berhampur: In a tragic incident, Dr. Sangram Sabat, Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Ganjam, passed away following a heart attack at the age of just 45.
According to reports, Dr. Sabat had complained of severe chest pain on Friday morning and was rushed to the medical college. Despite immediate medical care, he could not be revived. MKCG Superintendent Dr. Durga Madhab Satapathy told TOI that the professor had already passed away by the time he reached the hospital.
Rising Heart-Related Deaths Among Doctors
The incident adds to growing concerns about the increasing number of heart-related deaths among doctors aged 30–45. Experts attribute the trend to factors such as long working hours, heavy stress, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy dietary patterns leading to hypertension and high cholesterol.
Shockingly, this is the fifth such case in just one week. Recently, four other doctors across the country also succumbed to sudden cardiac events:
- Dr. Gradlin Roy (39), consultant cardiac surgeon at Saveetha Medical College, died of a massive cardiac arrest during duty rounds.
- Dr. Prakash Gupta (40), anaesthesia specialist at Goyal Hospitals, Jodhpur, passed away after a cardiac arrest.
- Dr. Gaurav Mittal (39), a critical care specialist, died following a heart attack.
- Dr. Devan (42), associate professor in cardiology at Manakula Vinayaga Medical College, succumbed to a massive cardiac arrest.
These back-to-back incidents have sparked alarm within the medical fraternity, highlighting the urgent need for better stress management, lifestyle interventions, and regular cardiac screening among healthcare professionals.
