Chennai: In a tragic turn of events, Dr. Devan, Associate Professor in the Cardiology Department at Manakula Vinayaga Medical College, passed away on August 31 following a massive cardiac arrest. He was just 42 years old.

Colleagues recall him as a brilliant doctor who saved countless lives during his medical career. Despite his expertise, he fell victim to the very ailment he specialized in.

One patient took to social media platform X to recall how Dr. Devan performed a life-saving angioplasty at Stanley Medical College Hospital, even standing up to hospital authorities when insurance formalities were delayed. “I am deeply indebted to him… RIP Devan sir,” the patient wrote.

Dr. Devan’s passing has reignited concerns over the rising number of sudden cardiac deaths among young doctors. In recent weeks, several medical professionals in their late 30s and early 40s have died of cardiac arrest, including:

  • Dr. Gaurav Mittal (39), a critical care specialist
  • Dr. Prakash Gupta (40), an anaesthesia specialist from Jodhpur
  • A 39-year-old cardiac surgeon at Saveetha Medical College, who collapsed during hospital rounds
