Sullia: Madhura, a 29-year-old woman from Naravi village in Beltangady, tragically lost her life due to excessive bleeding following childbirth at a government hospital in Sullia, raising serious concerns over alleged medical negligence.
Admitted on June 2 for the delivery of her second child, Madhura gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 6:45 pm on June 3. However, within hours—around 9 pm—she experienced severe postpartum haemorrhage. Doctors advised her transfer to Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru, but despite the transfer at 11:30 pm, Madhura succumbed to her condition at 12:37 am on June 4.
Body Released Without Post-Mortem; Community Leaders Demand Accountability
Controversy erupted when the hospital released Madhura’s body without conducting a post-mortem. As the family began funeral preparations, community leaders, including Sridhar Eedu, President of the Karnataka Malekudiya Association, intervened, demanding a thorough investigation. Their efforts prompted authorities to order a post-mortem and led to a formal complaint being lodged at the Sullia police station.
The bereaved family has called for strict action against those responsible and sought government compensation to support the child’s future.
Alarming Pattern of Postpartum Negligence
This incident is part of a troubling trend of postpartum medical negligence cases. Earlier reports highlighted a gynaecologist in Gurugram booked for negligence after disregarding a patient’s high-risk history, which led to her death following an attempted normal delivery.
Authorities are urged to conduct transparent investigations and implement stricter maternal care protocols to prevent such tragedies.
