Kalyan-Dombivli: A 26-year-old woman, Suvarna Sarode, tragically died following childbirth at Shashtri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli on February 12. In response, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Commissioner Indu Rani Jakhar has ordered the formation of two committees to investigate the case—one for medical errors and another for potential administrative lapses.
Investigation and Committees Formed
The first committee, headed by the District Surgeon of Thane, will conduct a medical inquiry to determine if there were any errors during the operation. The second committee will investigate any administrative failures at the hospital. A team from Thane’s district surgeons visited the hospital on February 13 to begin the investigation, with assurances of strict action against any malpractice.
Timeline of Events
Suvarna, from Motagaon village in Dombivli, was admitted to Shashtri Nagar Hospital on February 11 after experiencing labor pains. She had a cesarean delivery, which was initially successful. Afterward, both mother and baby were moved to the general ward. However, her labor pains resumed the following day, and a second cesarean section was performed. Despite initial improvements, her condition worsened, and she passed away on February 14 at 2:26 PM.
Family’s Allegations
Suvarna’s husband, Avinash Sarode, has accused the doctors of removing his wife’s uterus without consent and demanded justice. The family refused to accept her body until an FIR was filed and a report was provided. The family and relatives staged a 36-hour protest at the hospital, calling for action against those involved in her treatment. Police were stationed at the hospital to ensure law and order during the protest.
Political and Community Support
Deepa Shukla, a Medical Officer with KDMC, confirmed that the district surgeon team would lead the inquiry, with KDMC also conducting an internal investigation. Local political leaders, including Dipesh Mhatre from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction, joined the protest, expressing solidarity with the grieving family and calling for accountability for the alleged negligence.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have pledged a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding Suvarna Sarode’s death.
