MoS Health Shares Status and Recruitment Measures in Lok Sabha
New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav recently informed the Lok Sabha that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the establishment of 22 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the upgradation of 75 Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) have been approved across the country.
The Minister stated that the scheme covers setting up new AIIMS institutions, construction of super-speciality blocks, and strengthening infrastructure in existing Government Medical Colleges. Details of approved institutions have been placed in Annexure I and II, while vacancy data has been provided in Annexure III.
The information was shared in the Lok Sabha on February 6, 2026, in response to queries raised by MP Shyamkumar Daulat Barve. The MP sought to know the State-wise progress of AIIMS projects, super-speciality blocks, and upgraded GMCs under PMSSY.
He also asked for institution-wise and State/UT-wise details regarding vacant faculty and non-faculty posts in AIIMS, super-speciality blocks, and upgraded medical colleges. Additionally, he inquired whether a concrete time-bound action plan has been formulated to fill these vacancies.
Responding to the concerns, Jadhav clarified that creation of posts and recruitment is a continuous process. He said institution-wise details of sanctioned, filled, and vacant posts in various AIIMS under PMSSY have already been shared with Parliament.
To expedite recruitment, a Standing Selection Committee (SSC) has been constituted under the provisions of the AIIMS Act, 1956 for faculty appointments. The government has also allowed engagement of retired Professors, Additional Professors, and Associate Professors from Institutes of National Importance and Government Medical Colleges on contract up to the age of 70 years.
The Visiting Faculty Scheme further enables senior faculty members from government institutions in India and academic institutions abroad to serve at AIIMS for teaching assignments. This initiative is aimed at strengthening academic and clinical expertise in newly established institutions.
For non-faculty recruitment, the Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test (NORCET) and the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) are conducted by AIIMS Delhi. Additionally, the Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI-CET) and the Institute of National Importance Super Specialty (INI-SS) examinations are conducted twice a year for the selection of Junior and Senior Residents, ensuring a steady intake of medical professionals across AIIMS institutions.
