Crackdown Intensifies After Khyati Hospital Scam; 11 Doctors Also Suspended
Ahmedabad – In a sweeping action following the Khyati Hospital scam, the Gujarat Health Department has suspended 21 private hospitals from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) between April and June 2025 for serious violations including financial fraud, protocol breaches, and safety non-compliance.
According to official sources, five hospitals were suspended in April and four more in June, as the state continues its effort to enforce transparency and accountability in the flagship healthcare scheme.
Grave Allegations: Fraudulent Billing, Protocol Breaches, Poor Infrastructure
The suspended hospitals face multiple serious allegations, including:
- Inflating medical bills
- Tampering with patient records
- Admitting referred patients in violation of PMJAY protocol
- Unwarranted selection of high-cost treatment packages, particularly in neonatal care
Investigations revealed unusually high mortality rates in some hospitals, raising red flags about the quality of care. Several facilities were found lacking even basic infrastructure, operating without fire safety clearances, and running neonatal ICUs without CCTV surveillance. In many cases, hospitals were functioning on floors without legal building use (BU) permissions.
Hospitals Named in Suspension List
As per a report in Ahmedabad Mirror, the following hospitals are among those suspended:
- Christ Hospital and Gokul Hospital, Rajkot
- KP Sanghvi Hospital, Surat
- Aastha Hospital, Patan
- Dev Hospital, Chhota Udepur
- Ahmedabad Institute of Medical Services and Shaligram Multi-Speciality Hospital, Ahmedabad
- Rotary Medical and Research Centre, Gandhinagar
- Siddhi Vinayak Hospital, Tapi
Widespread Non-Compliance Uncovered in PMJAY Audits
Routine inspections have exposed rampant non-compliance beyond the suspended hospitals. Several hospitals:
- Failed to display information boards on PMJAY-covered services
- Were not registered under the Clinical Establishments Act, despite mandatory requirements
This has raised further concerns about the overall implementation of PMJAY in Gujarat.
Doctors Also Under the Scanner
The crackdown has extended to individual accountability. 11 doctors have been suspended from PMJAY for their alleged involvement in malpractices related to billing, treatment approvals, and falsification of medical records.
Context: Fallout from the Khyati Hospital Case
The recent actions appear to be part of the broader fallout of the Khyati Hospital scam, in which gross negligence and medical fraud triggered legal action and public outrage. In a related case, a court recently denied bail to the hospital’s director, underscoring the gravity of the issue.
Authorities have stated that further investigations and audits are underway, and more action may follow in the coming months.
