Jaipur: A 10-year-old boy with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is in critical condition after allegedly receiving the wrong blood type during a transfusion at JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur. The hospital administration has formed a four-member committee to investigate the incident.
The boy, whose blood type is O+, was reportedly administered AB+ blood on December 4, 2024, during his first transfusion. Two days later, he received the correct blood type. He is currently on ventilator support in the ICU.
Dr. Kailash Meena, the medical superintendent of JK Lone Hospital, stated that the child’s critical state is primarily due to his pre-existing health issues rather than the wrong transfusion. Tests conducted to determine adverse reactions to the incorrect blood type have reportedly shown no evidence of complications related to the mix-up.
“We have formed a committee to investigate the incident and are closely monitoring the child’s health. Tests conducted to check for an adverse reaction showed no issues,” Dr. Meena said. However, unnamed official sources revealed that the child is battling for his life. His blood report indicates creatinine levels of 8.5 mg/dl (normal range: 0.6–1.5 mg/dl), urea levels of 336 mg/dl (normal range: 10–50 mg/dl), and hemoglobin at 5.1 gm/dl (normal range: 12–18 gm/dl).
Dr. Kapil Garg, a senior professor of pediatrics, is leading the investigation into the circumstances of the blood transfusion error and reviewing the hospital’s protocols for blood collection and administration.
Dr. Deepak Maheshwari, Principal and Controller of SMS Medical College, added that while the boy remains critical due to his underlying condition, no immediate adverse reactions to the incorrect blood transfusion have been observed. The hospital continues to monitor his condition closely as the investigation progresses.
